Press release from Quincy University

Students, staff, and faculty at Quincy University are celebrating Deaf Awareness Week (September 21-25) with a series of interactive demonstrations and events throughout the week. Members of QU’s sign language interpretation field will provide American Sign Language interpretation at all events.

On Monday, September 21, students and members of the Deaf community are invited to a tour of Quincy’s Central Fire Station at 9th and York led by Fire Chief Joseph Henning and interpreted by QU students. Henning is the son of Joe and Janice Henning, both members of the Deaf community. The tour begins at 2:00 pm followed by a hands-on demonstration at QU’s North Campus beginning at 3:30 at which students will learn the basics of firefighting techniques.

That evening, students will host a “Silent Supper” at The Abbey at which patrons are encouraged to communicate without spoken words. Ten percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Quincy Deaf Club and the QU Student Interpreters Association. The event runs from 6:00 until 9:00 pm.

On Wednesday, September 23, QU will participate in “ASL Only Day”. Participating students, staff, and faculty will be using American Sign Language all day long without talking. At noon, students will host a luncheon in the Main Dining Room at which the National Anthem will be performed in sign language. Mayor Kyle Moore will be in attendance to present a proclamation to President Robert Gervasi, also interpreted by students. Members of the Deaf Community are invited to the luncheon at no cost.
