Quincy to Conduct the Fall Tree Planting Campaign

The City of Quincy is offering its fall tree planting program starting on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 through Friday, October 31, 2014. Under the program, Quincy residents and business owners may buy one tree each for planting on the City’s right of way adjacent to the applicant’s property. The cost is $40 each tree.

Leffers Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. will plant the trees. However, the homeowner is responsible for watering and other upkeep. Young trees require large amounts of water, especially during long periods of dry weather.

Several different varieties of trees are available. Applicants may request a certain variety of tree, if available; however, the City reserves the right to adjust the location of the tree, or even the type of tree, to make sure the tree will not interfere with water, gas or overhead utility infrastructure.

Most trees will be planted in the right of way between the sidewalk and the street.  Quincy residents who live in subdivisions without sidewalks may purchase trees; however, the trees should be planted in the front yard, no more than 10 feet from the edge of the curb.

A total of 80 trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The trees will be approximately eight (8) to 10 feet in height and two (2) inches in diameter when planted. The varieties of trees available are: October Glory Maple, Autumn Flame Maple, Green Mountain Sugar Maple, Brandywine Maple, Robin Hill Serviceberry, Kwanzan Cherry, and Ivory Silk Lilac.

Trees can be purchased in person with cash, check or money order from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the City Hall Annex, 706 Maine Street, Third Floor.  More information is available by calling (217) 228-4515.
