This past Saturday I spent a good deal of my time picking up tree debris left from the monster storm that hit Quincy on July 13. It was hot and I was drinking fluids trying not to overheat while cleaning up my property. There were tree limbs everywhere just like other places around town. Organizations and neighbors banded together to help out people like they always do in Quincy in times of need. People helping people is a good thing but hours after cleaning up my property and perhaps suffering from slight heatstroke, I began to wonder where was the Displaced Squirrel Society or D.S.S.?

Lets face it, like them or not, with so many trees downed by the 75 mile an hour straight line wind of July 13, there have to be thousands of displaced squirrels in our tree city. As the wind was barreling down on the people of Quincy, it was rocking and rolling the homes of these four legged creatures too. With their homes (trees) shaking back and forth, they had to be wondering if they were at Six Flags or something.

For some of them, their homes came down as well. Unlike us, they can't call their insurance agent and get a motel room for the night. Where is the D.S.S.?  Do squirrels help squirrels? Do other squirrels take in their displaced brethren? If so, how long do you think it will take before the owners of the squirrel home say "it's time to find another tree"? I am sure there are just so many acorns to go around.

All these thoughts went through my mind while I recovered drinking more and more fluids. Perhaps I should have just drank water and not put anything in it.
