So during the Quincy city council meeting held on Monday, September 14th, things got a little heated between the council members and police Chief Rob Copley. Copley was hoping that the council would at least have a discussion on the possibility of the city charging a $300 impounded vehicle fee in an effort to utilize the new revenue to hire two new officers for the police department. Instead of a discussion, the council declined to give it a first reading.

Copley was upset that they didn’t even give the proposal a discussion.  The city council, primarily Aldermen Paul Havermale and Mike Farha, were both vocal in complaining about the way Chief Copley reacted to the lack of movement by the council. Mayor Kyle Moore also reiterated during the meeting his concern for hiring two new officers without a funding source.

I see both sides of this battle.  The City needs to keep an eye on its finances and the Police Department, facing increased crime in the city, is in need of the two new officers.

What I can’t see is the lack of concern for at least sitting down with each other and pursuing other options. This was one plan and apparently it was not an option the council wanted.  So does that mean that there are no other options out there?  The vehicle impound plan was presented by Chief Copley.  Perhaps he can come up with something else.  With that said, there is no reason why any of the city council members can’t also come up with a plan of their own.

Hanging this on the Police Chief to find a solution is short sighted. The Chief’s frustration with the council is also counter-productive. The Police Chief and the council members need to put their heads together and work on a solution.  Oh yes, it’s your city too, so to the citizens of this city, I challenge you to present your own plan to your alderman or to Chief Copley. Who knows, your plan maybe the best solution!
