“Well, hello Mrs. Cleaver.  You are looking lovely today”.  Those words from Eddie Haskell were uttered for the first time as “Leave it to Beaver” was telecast for the very first time on CBS Television on this date in 1957.  The show eventually moved to ABC in its third season. This was just one of many entertainment news stories that happened on this date in history.

For instance, rock singer Janis Joplin was found dead of a heroin overdose in a hotel in Hollywood, California at the age of 27 in 1970.  In 1976, Barbara Walters became America’s first female evening network news anchor when she joined Harry Reasoner at the anchor desk of the ABC Evening News.  In 1978, country singer Tammy Wynette was kidnapped and later released unharmed.

In 1986 Actor Rock Hudson died from AIDS. That same day, CBS news anchor Dan Rather  was assaulted by two men in New York City. One of the men asked Rather, “What’s the frequency, Kenneth? The bazaar question was the inspiration for REM’s song of the same name.

Three years later, the creator of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Graham Chapman died.  Lastly, on this date in 1990 Beverly Hills 90210 premiered on the Fox Network.
