If you were looking forward to those little Valentine’s Day candy hearts with the cute little messages inscribed on them, I’ve got some bad news for you. They ain’t happening in 2019.

I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day, but if there's one thing I do like about it, it's the candy. And without these heart candies, it just won't be the same. These little iconic treats were produced by the New England Confectionary Company (NECCO) which went bankrupt in 2018 marking and end to their signature candies.

But there’s a silver lining. According to wkyc.com, the candies will be back next year as the NECCO brand was purchased by Spangler Candy Company in September. With the late purchase of the company, this was not enough time to get the Sweetheart candies produced for V-Day 2019.

The article notes that there will likely be knockoffs made available by competitors, but the real thing will be nowhere in site. That being said, if you take to ebay or the black market (there MUST be a black market for Valentine’s Day candy, right?), you’ll likely be paying more for candy that is at least a year old. Gross.

Most recently, NECCO produced more than 8 billion Sweethearts every year. I think we can all survive one year without the little hearts. I guess chocolate companies will have an even better February than originally thought.
