John Mayer on Exes Writing Songs About Him: ‘You’re Not Supposed to Tell Everyone’

TMZ recently caught up with John Mayer, who was pretty honest about his thoughts on ex-girlfriends writing songs about him.

According to Perez Hilton, Katy Perry revealed to Chelsea Handler in the July issue of Cosmopolitan that she plans to write songs about her relationship with Mayer. “I have a lot of respect for [John] still, and I know it goes both ways. There’s no bad blood, but I’m sure there will be inspired songs.”

So what did Mayer say to TMZ about the idea of exes, specifically Perry, writing songs about him? “That’s what you’re supposed to do, man. You’re supposed to write songs. You’re just not supposed to tell everyone you’re doing it.”

Ouch!

In regards to the idea that any of his ex’s songs about him might go number one, he responded jokingly, “I actually want everybody’s songs to go number one! I actually, purposely, stopped writing hits to give other people a chance to have number one songs. I just stand to the side.”

If Perry goes through with the idea of writing about Mayer, she wouldn’t be the first. Taylor Swift, whom had a brief relationship with Mayer, reportedly wrote the song ‘Dear John’ about him.
