Today is Sadie Hawkins Day, the day girls ask guys out for dates. The origin of Sadie Hawkins Day began in Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip on November 15, 1937.

Sadie Hawkins was, lets say, not the most pleasing on the eyes kind of girl. She grew tired of waiting for boys to contact her. Her father was a prominent resident of Dogpatch and he worried about Sadie living at home for the rest of his life. So he decreed the first annual Sadie Hawkins Day which turned out to be a foot race in which the unmarried gals in the area would pursue the area's bachelors with matrimony the consequence.

The idea caught on around the country with over 200 colleges holding Sadie Hawkins Day events in 1939 according to Life Magazine. The idea of Al Capp still goes on strongly today so bachelors of the world be ready.
