The year is 2014 and we are still wrestling with unequal pay for men and women in this country. This is an issue that is long overdue to go away. Why should men make more for a job than a woman? Give me one reason why job A is worth more to Sam than it is to Mary. It is time to put this issue behind us and pay a person what the job is worth and not pay a man this and a woman that.

President Barack Obama Tuesday signed an executive order that addresses the issue of unequal pay among federal contractors. While equal-pay advocates hail the move as a victory, many also say it doesn't go far enough.

Tuesday’s signing coincided with National Equal Pay Day, serving as a reminder that more than 50 years after the Equal Pay Act was made law, women still earn less then men.

On average, women earn only about 77 cents on the dollar compared with men. African-American women and Latinas take home even less, just 64 cents and 54 cents, respectively, for every dollar earned by men, according to the National Women’s Law Center.

Congress needs to address this matter and address it soon. I read somewhere that women now makeup over half of the working population in this country. Even if they represented only 10% of the working population, they need to be paid equally. I can't believe this wasn't done years ago.

We can't fix the past, but we can fix the future.
