The fourth annual Hannibal Polar Plunge for Special Olympics is planned for February 22 at the Hannibal marina.

According to Olympics regional coordinator Tim Schuster, last weekends Polar Plunge scheduled in Kirksville had to be rescheduled for March due to bad weather. It was the first time a Polar Plunge was postponed in Missouri.

The weather forecast for Hannibal’s plunge however is looking better at this point, with high's expected to be in the 50's.

Participants will plunge in the Mississippi River starting at 2 p.m. Registration begins at noon. Hannibal’s is the only Polar Plunge in Missouri to take place in the Mississippi River.

The event is hosted by Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department. Each plunger must donate $75 to Special Olympics in order to take the plunge. Each participant will receive a sweatshirt. Warming tents will also be available for plungers.

Online registration is available now.

The event supports Marion County Services for Developmentally Disabled. The organization coordinates the Special Olympics teams in Hannibal. More than 15,000 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.
