(Hannibal)– The Hannibal City Council approves the purchase of a key piece of real estate in the downtown area.

Tuesday evening, the Council voted to spend $220,000 for purchase of property located at 422 North Main Street, the former location of the Murphy Motor Chrysler dealership. City Manager Jeff LaGarce told the Council the building will be demolished in favor of uses that better enhance the historic area, one of them being additional parking.

In other business, Reliable Pest Solutions is selected to eradicate the excessive pigeon population on downtown rooftops. City Manager Jeff LaGarce says alternative U.S.D.A. methods involve a larger expenditure of both time and money than Reliable’s bid of $3560 for the first 8 weeks and $720 per 28-day period thereafter.

The Council also approved the low bid of just over $16,000 from Peter’s Heating and Air Conditioning for replacement of the boiler system at the Police Station. A Change Order in the amount of $26,312 relating to the Downtown Sidewalk Replacement Program was approved for Bleigh Construction to install electrical “festival boxes” and wiring at proposed tree footings.

New technology made its debut against the backdrop of the nostalgic decor of the council chambers Tuesday night, as the Council viewed the agenda on new I-Pads.
