‘Frozen’ on Broadway Casts Its Elsa and Anna, Gets New Choreographer

Frozen Anna and Elsa

Frozen is set to join mainstays like The Lion King and Aladdin on Broadway next year, and today we found out who’ll be playing whom onstage.

Caissie Levy and Patti Murin are set as Elsa and Anna, respectively, the sisters at the heart of the fairy-tale story. Levy is a Broadway veteran, having appeared in Ghost, Hair and Les Miserables. Murin has some experience on the Great White Way as well, with credits for Lysistrata Jones and Xanadu.

We’ve known about the upcoming stage production of Frozen for more than a year now, but this is the first official announcement of who’ll be stepping into roles voiced on-screen by Idina Menzel (Elsa), herself a longtime Broadway star, and Kristen Bell (Anna). In addition to the two leads, the rest of the cast will include Jelani Alladin as Kristoff, Greg Hildreth as Olaf, John Riddle as Hans, and Robert Creighton as the Duke of Weselton. Variety also tells us that Rob Ashford will be stepping in as the show’s choreographer, replacing Christopher Gatelli, who had replaced the production’s original choreographer, Peter Darling. Michael Grandage will direct.

The theatrical edition is based on the 2013 animated film that earned $400 million domestically and another $875 million in foreign markets. A film’s sequel is, obviously, already in the works, along with a TV special due at the end of 2017.

Prior to hitting Broadway, the stage show is set for run in Denver from mid-August through the beginning of October, before moving to the St. James Theatre in New York in spring 2018. It sounds like as close to a sure thing as there is on Broadway, so fans will be able to hear “Let It Go” live and in-person anytime they want. (As long as they’re willing to shell out a few hundred bucks, that is.)
