Clemson took the top spot in the initial college football playoff poll, but the selection committee made sure we had our first poll controversy, selecting one-loss Alabama over a host of undefeated teams. The No. 1 Tigers are followed by LSU and Ohio State, with the Crimson Tide rounding out the top four.

The playoff committee made sure that fans would have something to debate, putting two one-loss teams (Alabama and No. 5 Notre Dame) ahead of undefeated squads like Baylor, TCU, Michigan State and Iowa. But selection committee chair Jeff Long was quick to point out that the poll will be fluid as those teams' resumes will change dramatically over the next month.

"I think the strength of schedule is what left us uncertain of their true strength," Long said, when discussing the merits of Baylor and TCU specifically. "They have their strength of schedule in front of them."

The committee will release a new poll every Tuesday until December 6, when the final playoff seedings will be announced.
