Saturday is National Train Day and it got me to thinking about trains and all of the train songs that have been recorded over the years. There are quite a few train songs out there but for my money the best one ever is The City of New Orleans written by Steve Goodman in 1971.

Arlo Guthrie recorded it in 1972 on his "Hobo's Lullaby" album and if you listen carefully to the lyrics the song takes you nostalgically from the glory days of railroads to its darkest days. You can hear The City of New Orleans from time to time on our sister station WLIQ (1530 on the AM dial). I never get tired of hearing it.

My next favorite train song is the O'Jay's Love Train followed by Cats Stevens Peace Train.  What's you favorite train song?
