The Lewis County School District has been one of the hardest hit in our area this winter, with Clark, Knox and Marion County R-II coming in as close runners-up.
For much of this seemingly endless winter, Lewis Co. School Superintendent John French has woken up to his alarm trilling rudely at 4:00 a.m. He trudges out to travel snow-packed and treacherously icy roads to confirm what he already suspected. He has to call off school. Again. In fact, he's had to make that call 20 times this winter, plus two early dismissals on top of that.
There have been several days this winter in which inclement weather has caused more than a few school cancellations. And area superintendents are getting pretty creative when it comes to making their big announcements each day.
It's the best week of the year for students who attend Catholic schools, not just locally but for the 1.9 million children enrolled in Catholic schools across the nation.
Just south of Canton, Missouri sits Martin Park. And within that park sits an old brick building with a ton of history. Opening in the late 1800s, this brick building was once a one-room school (named Lincoln Colored School) for African American children in grades one through eight. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, but fell into disrepair.
For nearly 40 years the Quincy Elks Lodge #100 has held the local "Hoop Shoot" competition for young people between the ages of 8 and 13. That event will take place again this Saturday.
