Gem City Gymnastics and Tumbling and the City of Quincy are hosting the 2013 Illinois AAU Tumbling and Trampoline State Championships tomorrow at the Oakley Lindsay Center in Quincy. More than 325 athletes, including 30 from Gem City Gymnastics and Tumbling, representing 25 gyms are registered to compete.
Four years ago I lost my best friend and hundreds of others did likewise with the passing of John Tripp. I started to write a blog about John this morning, but I kept deleting what I was writing. The season opening Farmer's Market begins this morning at Washington Park in Quincy. Today's opening marks the 31st year for the event which feature fresh vegetables, fruit and plants provided by local farmers in the area.

I recently received an invitation to travel to Springfield, Missouri to attend the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Banquet to witness former St. Louis Cardinal Rightfielder/Third Baseman and current Cardinal Broadcaster Mike Shannon be named the 26th Missouri Sports Legend for the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
I was reading my Sunday edition of the Quincy Herald Whig when I came across an insert for National Train Day which is Saturday, May 11. The insert was apparently provided and paid for by the Henry County, Illinois Tourism Bureau, The City of Kewanee, Illinois, and the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Mile after Magnificent Mile.
Steel Magnolia returns to Quincy this Friday, May 10, and the best part? Tickets are only $10. The show starts at 10 p.m. at Holler & Swaller Saloon, 3rd & Hampshire (below Tiramisu).

American Business Women's Association (ABWA) Dogwood Ball will be held this Saturday, at the Elk’s Club in Quincy. The Dogwood Ball is part of this weekend's Dogwood Festival and has not been held since 2006.
