First 2015 Human West Nile Virus Deaths in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first two human West Nile Virus related deaths in Illinois for 2015. The Cook County Department of Public Health reported a resident in their 90’s became ill at the end of August and has died. Separately, the Kendall County Health Department reported a resident in their 70’s became ill at the end of July and has died. The Adams County Health Department detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes from the Quincy area earlier this year. Currently, there are no reported positive human cases in Adams County.

It’s 2015, Underground Power Lines Need to Happen

Last Friday I had the opportunity to listen to Adams County Emergency Services Director John Simon as he spoke to the Quincy Exchange Club. During his comments he mentioned that some 21,800 power connections needed replacement as a result of the huge front-line wind storm that ripped through the area. As you already know, thousands of residents were without power for days.   It makes you wonder if we are way past the time when power lines and poles need to go away?

Cleanup News Conference Calls for Weekend Volunteers [Listen]

The storm recovery project is continuing in the City of Quincy. This upcoming weekend will be filled with the sounds of chainsaws as people try to clear their property of fallen tree limbs. There are plenty of elderly and disabled people who will not be able to do any cleanup. Therefore, there is  a request for people who can help them this Saturday and Sunday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days. If you can volunteer this weekend, please call (217)-214-7788.

Everyone Around Here Remembers the Levee Break on July 16, 1993

If you were around Quincy 22 years ago today, you probably know where you were when you heard the news that the levee in West Quincy failed to hold back the mighty Mississippi River. We all knew when it happened because the news and the river spread like wildfire. What we didn't know at the time was that the levy failed thanks to the assistance of Quincy native James Scott, who was eventually convicted of "creating a catastrophe" by removing sand bags in the area of the levee break. Would the levee have held back the rising water on its own?  Only God knows.
