I was with my Exchange Club members last night removing the flags from the Field of Honor on the grounds of the Illinois Veteran's Home. During that process, I was told that someone complained about using the flags as a money maker for the Exchange Club. My first reaction was to get mad over it. I took a breath and gave this some thought before responding.

The Exchange Club and its membership works very hard to raise funds for the community to help young people, seniors and veterans. It's why we do Gus Macker, Smoke on the River and Field of Honor. Then I got to thinking, that this person has every right to complain because she lives in America. A right provided to all of us thanks to our veterans. A comment like that in another country may have landed her in jail or even death. It is what is so great about this country.

She has every right to say what she said whether you agree with it or not. And that's what makes this country what it is. A country that everyone wants to live in. Those Field of Honor flags represent her right to free speech. So if you got mad about her comment like I did, just thank God you are an American. And lady, we may not agree with you but if you need us, we will still have your back.
