A fun holiday tradition many families look forward to each year is going out to a farm to choose and cut their own Christmas trees. Most farms that provide choose-and-cut Christmas trees have traditionally offered a hayride, hot chocolate and cookies for their customers, which makes the experience even more special, but it seems like it is getting harder and harder to find these types of places.
The First Church of the Nazarene in Hannibal will be marking a milestone in 2013, as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Live Nativity. As part of the anniversary celebration, participants from previous years of the Live Nativity will be involved with the 2013 display.
Here's a great story of generosity for the holidays. A Hannibal woman who has been collecting dolls for over 30 years is donating her collection to The Salvation Army. The dolls will be auctioned off on Sunday at the Kroc Center to raise funds for The Salvation Army's 2013 Christmas Campaign.
The holidays can be a stressful time for everyone. Christmas shopping can easily drain bank accounts and rack up credit card charges, which is why we want to help! We're going to give away a $100 shopping card to the Quincy Mall EVERY weekday between December 9 and December 20. That's ten chances to win!
There's probably a good chance you'll catch 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,' 'Frosty the Snowman,' or 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' on TV during the holiday season. Viewers have been watching these holiday specials on television for decades. Many adults make it a holiday tradition to watch these shows, which they remember from their own childhoods, with their children and grandchildren. Some adults even watch them without children and grandchildren!
I went Black Friday shopping for the very first time last year. Not that I had never been to a store on Black Friday, but until last year I had never gone out at super weird hours; I'd always gone to see what was left over, after the craziness had wrapped up. Last year I decided to give some of the craziness a try.
Every year a report comes out from the American Farm Bureau Federation that calculates the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal. Usually the cost is figured for enough food to feed ten people. I've always thought that was an awfully low number of guests to account for. At most Thanksgiving get-togethers I've attended, there are usually at least ten people just waiting in line for the bathroom!
A few years back, the Saturday following Black Friday was designated "Small Business Saturday." The idea is to ask shoppers to think local during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. Several local businesses in Hannibal will be offering Small Business Saturday specials in 2013.
The cliche' thing to say when stories like this come up is "the end of an era." In this case, that would probably be a pretty generous statement. The Winamp era probably ended quite some time ago. Quite honestly, it's a program I've not used in years, and probably would probably never even think about, unless it was brought up in conversation, or, in today's case, the news. Even so, I sort of feel bad that this program I never use, and haven't used in years, is going away.
Food pantries in our area are struggling to keep their shelves stocked. River Skate recently opened for the season in Clat Adams Park, and on Thursday they'll be doing their part to help out those in need by hosting a food drive to benefit Horizons' kitchen.
