Jeffrey Dorsey

My radio career began at KIEE-FM in Harrisonville, Missouri which later became KCFX in Kansas City. I worked there for 4 years before landing a position at WTAD and KHQA-TV here in Quincy doing a radio show and play-by-play sports. After doing TV Sports for KHQA, I worked for both WTAD and WQCY-FM (99Q). I moved over to WGEM as Operations Manager and then returned to WTAD as General Manager. In 2001 I joined Y101. I have been fortunate enough to win 6 Silver Dome Awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association , including 5 for best Play-By-Play and one for Best Radio Show Entertainer. My favorite music is the Blues. The New York Yankees and the Kansas City Chiefs are my favorite teams. I played baseball for 24 years and my claim to fame is a double off of Rick Sutcliffe when we both played in Kansas City.

‘Now Batting, The Big Dog and Brian Myles’

We are rapidly approaching the Major League Baseball All-Star break.  The event this year is in Minneapolis and begins with the Home Run Hitting Contest on Monday night followed by the actual All-Star Game on Tuesday night. In honor of the Home Run Hitting Contest, the two biggest baseball fans in the building, yours truly and Brian Myles, decided to head to the Quincy Park District's Batting Cage to audition for the chance to replace one of Monday's scheduled contestants if he should have to remove himself from the contest.

‘The District’ Begins Flag Purchasing Campaign

I received a newsletter this morning from The District in Quincy. In it, Travis Brown of wrote the following, “As Independence Day came and went, we have noticed that the American flags throughout The District are becoming more tattered and worn. This doesn't reflect well upon our City or our patriotism as a community, and The District is organizing an effort to change this.”

At What Age Do You Give a Child a Cell Phone?

When cell phones first came out it was usually the parents who had them. As they became cheaper to buy, with family packages and all that, the children in the family became owners of their own cell phones. That has all led to the question of at what age do you give your child his or her first cell phone?

Super Bowl ’50′ Will Not Be Super Bowl ‘L’

When I was a kid in school they actually spent time teaching me and my fellow students Roman numerals. Do they still do it today? I can honestly tell you that the only time I ever encounter Roman numerals anymore is at the beginning of a movie (when they flash the title) and when I read about the NFL's Super Bowl Game. Those are the only two times I ever see it. I have to ask the question "why did I need to know them in the first place?"

Where Would You Hold Next Year’s Fireworks in Quincy? [Poll]

It was an absolutely perfect night for fireworks last Friday night. The annual fireworks display in Quincy took place at the Illinois Veterans Home. In other years it has been held on the Quincy Riverfront. So I ask the question, if you had to make the decision on where the fireworks display should take place for next July 4, would you select the Illinois Veteran's Home or the Quincy Riverfront (or someplace else)?

The Mississippi River flood problems continue to plague the area.  At approximately 9:45 a.m., IDOT and MoDOT crews closed the US 24 eastbound traffic on the Quincy Memorial Bridge at the Mississippi River at West Quincy. The Bayview Bridge at Quincy will temporarily carry both east and westbound traffic into Quincy or motorists may cross the Mississippi River Bridge on I-72/US 36 over the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge at Hannibal.

Cracker Jack is Worth Millions Thanks to Baseball

The song came out in 1908 and it is played at almost every baseball game played in America, including the Hannibal Cavemen and the Quincy Gems games. It's the 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' song, and that song has single-handedly sent the sales of Cracker Jack through the roof.
